Jamestown Settlement

Jamestown visitor center celebrates the history of the colony of Jamestown settlement and makes learning history fun and available to a broad cross section of society. In preparation for the 400th anniversary, Jamestown needed to prepare for 100’s of thousands of visitors and its moment in the international spotlight.

LPDA was hired as part of a multidisciplinary team charged with the redesign of the visitor center’s public face. LPDA worked closely with the Jamestown Yorktown Foundation’s management and engineers to develop a design program and design documents for the main entry, bus and car parking areas, flag plaza, café and ancillary gathering and maintenance areas.

LPDA planned and and prepared layouts for the main circulation for vehicles and buses, parking areas, and all pedestrian areas and amenities. The design included extensive native landscaping and the preservation of several historic oak trees. A commemorative flag plaza and fountain introduces the public to the facility. Café, picnic and gathering areas accommodate crowds in all seasons.
