VDOT Joint Safety Operations Center

In order to consolidate services and provide a coordinated effort in servicing regional traffic operations, safety and enforcement support, VDOT and the Virginia State Police partnered on a joint operations center. The proposed structure is a three-story building of steel structure, masonry, curtain wall glazing and composite metal panels. LPDA was hired as part of the architectural team to assist with site planning, landscape and hardscape design. The client required a landscape that added environmental and social value while providing a retreat from the stressful environment of the operation center. They asked for an environment that they could make an emotional connection to. The design includes an interconnected hierarchy of walkways and pedestrian spaces, water features and hardscape areas which reflect the landscape typologies of the region. A series of outdoor rooms were created to accommodate outdoor dining, meetings, and contemplation. The project meets the Virginia High Performance Building Act.
